Up On The Trail

This plein air work was painted on a hillside across from the village of Ferreirola, in the Alpujarras Mountains of Spain.  

This is one of my favorite memories from a painting week in southern Spain: a short hike up a mountainside led us to this peaceful spot overlooking the valley. In the distance, you can make out the white buildings of the village nestled in the hills. What really caught my eye, though, was the beautifully gnarled old chestnut tree, its remaining branches stretching wide in the foreground. The tree became a key part of my painting that day.
